Refugee Resettlement Grant Reported to Nearly Double to $4,500 per Person

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The one-time federal grant that helps newly arrived refugees set up their first home in the United States is set to rise from $2,450 to $4,500 per person from October 1, 2026, according to reporting by immigration journalist Ted Hesson in The Washington Post [1]. As South Africans currently make up the large majority of new refugee arrivals, Saffer families are expected to be the main beneficiaries [1][2].

The increase and how the money is divided were explained for the South African community on Colonel Chris Wyatt's YouTube Channel [2].

Colonel Chris Wyatt explains how the reported $4,500 grant is made up and what it could mean for South African families arriving now.

His video puts the Washington Post report into plain, practical terms and is well worth watching before you speak to your resettlement agency.

How the $4,500 Is Reported to Be Structured

The grant belongs to the State Department's Reception and Placement (R&P) program, which pays a resettlement agency to support each refugee during the first months after arrival [3]. Under the reported change [1][2]:

Has It Been Confirmed?

When The Washington Post published its report, the change was still moving through policy channels [1][4]. At the time of writing, we have not found an official State Department notice confirming the new amount or the $4,000 / $500 split.

What to do: ask your resettlement agency how much Reception and Placement funding applies to your family, how it will be paid to you, and whether the October 1 amount already applies to your arrival date. For other help in your state, see our Refugee Support page.

This grant is separate from the 12 months of Refugee Cash and Medical Assistance covered in Article 2.
